Furthermore, bright light, specifically sunshine, can improve your mood and help ward off depression. But all things in moderation. Overexposure to UV rays can cause potentially extensive damage to the skin, an all-too-common occurrence. "Skin cancer is now considered epidemic throughout the nation", according to The Centers for Disease Control Prevention. "Over one million residents in the United States are expected to get skin cancer this year more people than the collective total of all who will get cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays in sunlight causes 90 percent of the skin cancer cases." And this overexposure may double the risk of melanoma, a type of skin cancer that causes more than 80 percent of skin cancer deaths.

UV rays cause oxidative damage and can actually change the skin's DNA cellular structure, creating highly unstable and toxic molecules. These are known as free radicals and can lead to malignancies. Sunscreen, adequate coverage and sunglasses have long been recommended to avoid this damage, but diverse studies now suggest some promising supplemental strategies for UV protection from the inside out. Certain nutrients and a low-fat diet have shown specific anti-cancer properties.

Free Radical Control

Antioxidants have long been known to neutralize free radicals and render them inactive, protecting cellular structure. Powerful antioxidants include vitamin C (citrus fruits, strawberries, broccoli, tomatoes), vitamin E (asparagus, raw nuts and seeds, spinach), beta-carotene (yellow and orange vegetables) as well as the minerals zinc (shell fish, legumes, whole-grain foods) and selenium (nuts, whole-wheat bread, oatmeal). A recent study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology demonstrates that lutein and zeaxanthin, plant pigments found in predominately green leafy vegetables, also have strong antioxidant properties that diminish the effects of UV irradiation by reducing the acute inflammatory responses. Lutein- and zeaxanthin-rich foods include green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, broccoli and turnips as well as corn and egg yolks.

As long ago as 1991, studies have shown green tea consumption and topical application afford protection against skin tumors. More recent research corroborates these results and points to the polyphenols in green tea, which contain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, one major element in green tea, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), is thought to stop production of an enzyme required for cancer cell growth. Several cups of green tea might be a worthwhile addition to your daily routine.

Avoiding fatty foods may also provide benefit. Studies suggest that a low-fat diet can reduce the incidence of premalignant lesions called actinic keratosis. To maintain a low-fat diet, the U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends that you get most of your calories from organic, whole foods such as grains, fruits, and vegetables and to avoid foods high in saturated fats. For more information, visit the website www.health.gov/dietaryguidelines/.

Know the Index

Even though it is helpful to counteract damage to your skin through nutrition, it remains vital to shield yourself from the sun's invisible UV rays and avoid them when they're at their most intense. The UV Index, a measurement of ultra-violet sun radiation, can assist in protecting you from potentially harmful exposure. This forecast of UV intensity ranges from a nighttime low of 0 to a very sunny 10-plus. It is greatest when the sun hits its apex (noon), then rapidly decreases as the sun moves across the afternoon sky. The higher the UV Index, the shorter the time for skin damage to occur. To determine the UV Index in your area, check your local newspaper, TV and radio news broadcasts, or you can visit www.epa.gov/sunwise/uvindex.html, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's website. This rating allows you to determine your geographic risk and, in turn, the level of adequate sun protection needed.

Regardless of your sun-screening defenses, always be vigilant about checking your skin for possible signs of melanoma. "When melanoma is detected in its early stage, surgical removal cures the disease in most cases," according to the American Academy of Dermatology. "If the disease has spread to lymph nodes, the 5-year survival rate is 30-40 percent. If the disease has spread to distant organs, the 5-year survival rate is 12 percent."

Melanoma appears as a pre-existing mole that changes, or as a new mole on previously unaffected/clear skin. Performing skin self-exams every few months and knowing the characteristics to look for in any mole identified will enhance early detection and reduce risk. For more information on early detection, visit www.skincancer.org.

And don't forget common sense practices:
--Avoid long-term sun exposure and wear a hat, sunglasses, and protective clothing.
--Apply sunscreen daily (preferably chemical free) and reapply as needed.
--Avoid artificial tanning devices.
--And be aware of sun exposure year-round.

With a few protective measures, you can continue to enjoy fun in the sun safely. Wear your sunscreen--in the winter months as well as the summer--seek shade, cover up with sleeves and pants, and don't forget your hat!

Savvi's Featured Products of the Month!

SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50

Broad-Spectrum UVA/UVB Sunscreen Fluid with Transparent Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide

Paraben Free / Chemical-Filter Free

Epicuren Zinc Oxide SPF 20

Physical Sunscreen and Moisturizer containing micronized Zinc Oxide; a naturally occurring mineral that gives broad spectrum sun protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Great for all skin types.

Rhonda Allison Daytime Defense SPF 30

A natural, ultra refined sunscreen, is a continuation of good skin care that gives your skin support from environmental pollution. Lately, some of my clients have been asking me about certain products they hear work "just like botox". My response to this is nothing but Botox works like Botox, and as Samantha Jones from Sex and the City said, "It works every time!". So what mysterious skin magic is at work here? Peptides. What are these and are they worth it? Check it out...

Peptides are segments of amino acids that constitute your collagen make up. When collagen breaks down, these peptides act as a signal to tell your skin it has been damaged and to make more protein(collagen). Skin is made up mostly of collagen; it is the foundation that gives your skin its support and thickness.

Here are three ways that peptides claim to improve wrinkles and make you look younger:

1. Peptides Signal Your Skin to Make More Collagen

When we age collagen is destroyed but not replaced. As a result young, smooth skin becomes thin and wrinkled over time.

Applying peptides directly to your skin is a way to trick your skin into thinking that it has lost collagen recently and needs to make more. The most popular signal peptide for cosmetic use is palmitoyl pentapeptide (Matrixyl). It can be found in many peptide skin products such as Rhonda Allison's Satin Peptide and Youth Essence Peptide Serum. Consistent use will result in firmer, thicker skin with less wrinkling, less photo-damage and overall improvement. (Really!)

2. Peptides Deliver Copper into Your Skin

Because peptides are small, they can penetrate the skin’s protective barriers to get to the deeper layers. When copper is attached to a peptide, the peptide can deliver copper to the living layers of the skin. There is research showing that copper is an effective agent in skin healing which is why it has been used for years to treat chronic wounds.

Copper peptides promote collagen production and act as antioxidants. They are needed for natural healing and regeneration of your skin and to help remove damaged collagen. Copper peptides can be found Epicuren's BioPeptide Serum.

3. Neuropeptides Have a "Botox" LIke Affect

Some peptides might block transmission of signals from nerves to your facial muscles. In particular, a neuropeptide called argireline has been shown in the laboratory to block the release of neurotransmitters from nerves. If argireline was absorbed all the way through the skin to the level of the muscle, then it might block contraction of the muscle, leading to smoother skin, similar to Botox.

Fall Facial Care

Fall has arrived. Even with our epic Central Coast weather, you can feel Fall is upon us. Personally, this is my very favorite time of year. That crisp air, gold Autumn lighting, warm Indian Summers...

And, the drier Fall climate. Skin speaking, I go for a hydrating facial with an emphasis on exfoliation to clean up my Post-Summer-Skin. You know how we haven't really exfoliated too much because we were having so much Summer fun at the:

1. All of the Above

...But, we did slather on the sunscreen! Now it's time for a Deep Cleansing Facial.

I'm pairing a Microdermabrasion Facial with a Complimentary Oxygen Therapy through the month of November. If you're feeling more festive, our Pumpkin Parfait Facial is a delicious way to get you back on track for your skin care needs before the Holidays.

Savvi Skin & Body Studio,

Bring your body and we'll take care of it.

What's in Your Shower?

As an Esthetician I tend to get a little obsessive with my skin care products. My clients often ask me what I use personally, what's in my shower or on my dressing table. Keep in mind that I'm naturally oily with ongoing breakout possibilities, which is how this whole thing started. Here's the long list...

RA's glycolic herbal wash and gentle milk cleansers are a staple in my house.

I alternate between RA's Pumice Wash, Beta Scrub or Epicuren's Benzoyl Peroxide Scrubs.

Epicuren's Acne Astringent, RA's Blemish Serum. ALWAYS.

Currently, moving into a drier season, I am using a nice little cocktail of RA's MVCserum, Hyaluronic Acid, and Epicuren's BioPeptide.

Then Zinc Protection Creme, which is the only moisturizer w/ SPF that I approve of.

Jane's Liquid Minerals followed by Riviera pressed powder.

I like the "I'm not wearing eye makeup look", so it's liquid liner and mascara for these brown eyes daily. Rarely do I stray....

At night I have been using SkinCeuticals Phyto+ for hyperpigmentation mixed with either the Skin Retexturizer or the Line Defense exfoliant.

RA's Ultra Hydration Creme if I'm feeling like I need a lil sumthin sumthin.

Epicuren's Body Scrub and the Lemongrass Afterbath with the Tropical Lave, Yumm-oh!

Obviously, I am partial to the lines that I carry, Epicuren, RA, SkinCeuticals, Jane Iredale, as the ingredients are impeccable and they work! But, I'm always looking for new things to entice my senses, so, what's in your shower?

Rhonda Allison's Top Ten Ingredients

So, this is my very first blog entry(!). I thought that for my first entry, I would pass on one of the numerous newsletters/emails I receive that I find so helpful in learning about skin care. This is from Rhonda Allison's Top Ten list with her commentary following each paragraph. She lists which of her wonderful products contain these buzzword ingredients as she is already ahead of the skin care game. As a self proclaimed product junkie, I find RA's retail/ professional line has kept me fully entertained and yet she continues to create more for me to play with!

I want to add that Rhonda doesn't include her Milk Mask as a probiotic provider but Epicuren has a topical acidopholis cream( see 7 PROBIATIC) for inflamed acneic skin types that many of my clients have found very soothing. I know of customized Epicuren facials to include refrigerated Kefir as a finishing mask for this same skin type. There are never ending possibilities with the science of skin care these days, I love it!
